Learning Objectives

NBCC Content Area 1: Counseling Theory/Practice and the Counseling Relationship

• Analyze the core assumptions, key constructs, and mechanisms of change across the four major theoretical forces in counseling, including psychodynamic and Adlerian, cognitive behavioral, humanistic-existential, and postmodern and systems approaches.

• Apply theory-specific interventions, including reinforcement-based behavior strategies, cognitive restructuring, the person-centered core conditions, solution-focused questioning, and externalizing conversations, to counseling scenarios involving children and adolescents.

• Construct theory-driven case conceptualizations that integrate presenting concerns, maintaining patterns, client strengths, and measurable outcome goals, and translate each conceptualization into a defensible intervention plan.

• Apply the ACA and NBCC codes of ethics and a structured ethical decision-making model to dilemmas involving minor clients, including informed consent and assent, limits of confidentiality, and mandated reporting obligations.

• Evaluate the influence of social and cultural factors, including worldview, privilege, systemic oppression, and intersectionality, on theory selection and treatment planning, and formulate culturally responsive counseling approaches.
